Get Started With a Bass Guitar Packagae

If you are interest in learning to play bass guitar there is no faster way to get started than by purchasing a bass guitar package. These packages will typically contain everything you need to get started right away. Bass packages can be purchased in a music store or online (usually at a much better price).

Types of Bass Guitars

The most common type of bass included in a package is a regular electric bass guitar. An electric bass guitar will have a solid body and require an amplifier in order to hear the sound. The bass amplifier will be included in the package along with a cord to connect the two together so you can start rocking!

A less common type of bass guitar is the acoustic bass. These are similar to an acoustic guitar and are hollow with a sound hole. No amplifier is required to hear the sound. Acoustic bass guitars are more of a specialty item and usually sold by themselves and not in a package with anything else. An acoustic bass can make a great second instrument after you've been playing for a while.

How Many Strings do I Need?

A regular bass guitar will have 4 strings tuned to E-A-D-G. 5 and 6 string basses are also available. The extra strings enable one to play a wider range of notes. A 4 string bass is recommended for beginners and is included in most bass guitar packages.

The Bass Amp

The amplifier that comes in a bass guitar package is suitable for beginners and for practicing, but is usually not suited for live performances in a large venue. Once a performance level is reached, it is usually recommended to upgrade the amplifier. When the amplifier is upgraded, it is not a requirement to also upgrade the bass guitar.

Learning to Play

To get started playing you can take the self learning approach or the lesson approach. Self learning is also a great way to supplement bass lessons from a teacher. Check your local music store to find out if they offer lessons. Many local community centers also offer lessons. Another way to find a bass teacher is to check out sites such as Craigslist. If you are interested in self learning, a simple Google search can bring up a load of sites that contain both text and video lessons.

Benefits of a Bass Guitar Package

Then nice thing about purchasing everything in a package is that you'll have everything you need in order to start learning how to play. Many packages will include accessories such as picks, a gig bag, extra strings, and a tuner. More accessories can always be picked up at any music store, but it's nice to be able to open the box to your bass package and start playing without having to rush out to a store to buy more extras.

Unboxing Your New Bass

When you open up your bass guitar package you'll probably need to give it a quick wipe down with a dry cloth and remove any protective plastic or film that may be on the guitar. Also be sure to tune it! If your package doesn't come with a tuner, there are many websites that will give you tones to help you get that bass in tune. Also be sure to read the instruction manual for your amplifier so you know what all the knobs do and how to adjust the sound to your liking.
